Hi fam,
How is it almost 2024 already? This year felt like it flew by faster than usual. Before I tell you what to expect if you’re traveling over the holidays, I have a few fun updates to share.
The next edition of Lonely Planet Iceland is coming out on March 19, and you can preorder here. I was the lead author of this guide, and I can’t wait to hold it in my hands. My mention of Shah Rukh Kahn and my section titled Don’t be like Justin Bieber made it through edits, and I’m so very proud of both of these things.
This is a very different style of Lonely Planet guide than those we’ve read over the years, and I hope you’ll tell me what you think of the changes.
March 19 is going to be a big day for me. It’s also when the newest edition of Lonely Planet New York City comes out. I wrote two chapters of this book—a history of the city in 15 places and a practical guide, which includes a blurb about why manspreading on crowded subways is never okay.
What To Expect If You’re Traveling Over the Holidays
If you’re headed to an airport on December 21 or December 22, the Thursday and Friday before Christmas, prepare yourself. These are expected to be the busiest travel days of the year, according to the travel booking site Hopper.
My home airport, Chicago O’Hare, is already getting busier, even for passengers with TSA precheck. But it’s only number eight on Hopper’s list of busiest US airports.
The travel booking site expects the largest crowds at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Denver International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles International Airport and Orlando International Airport in Florida.
If you’re flying through any of these airports, you can expect the biggest crowds passing through departure checkpoints between 8 am and noon, according to Hopper’s data.
Good luck out there, friends!

Next up in my 48 hours series, Luxor—You won’t see everything, but you really can get the Luxor experience in just 48 hours in this ancient Egyptian city. Here’s my guide to a perfect 48 hours in Luxor.
For MapHappy, I wrote about how to find great Internet speeds at sea. If you’ve asked me what the best ships and itineraries are for working from cruise ships, this piece is for you— and thanks for the inspiration!
